West Yorkshire is a county with a population of approximately 2.2 million people. The county is just over 200 miles from central London and covers an area of 783 square miles.

West Yorkshire is landlocked. It consists of five metropolitan boroughs: the City of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, the City of Leeds and the City of Wakefield. It borders Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire.

Leeds is the fourth largest city in England. It grew into a large city after the industrial revolution, when it became famous for its textiles, chemicals, leather and pottery industries. The industrialization of the city resulted in the building of the Leeds to Liverpool canal

Kirklees Hall is a 16th-century Jacobean hall, close to the English village of Clifton in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. Robin Hood is said to be buried there.

Sandal Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Sandal Magna, Wakefield in West Yorkshire. The castle overlooks the River Calder. It is the setting for the opening scene of one of William Shakespeare's Henry VI and the location made famous by the nursery rhyme ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’.

Famous residents of West Yorkshire over the years include actor Sean Bean who is well known for his appearances The Lord of the Rings. Others are Georgie Henley (actress) and Mathew Lewis (actor).
